Botanicals

Botanicals, like fallen leaves, twigs, and seed pods, are natural materials used in aquariums to mimic natural habitats and benefit fish. They release tannins that can tint the water and potentially lower pH, which can be beneficial for fish species that thrive in these conditions, like bettas and tetras. Additionally, botanicals provide a food source and hiding places for fish and other invertebrates.

Here's a more detailed look at how botanicals benefit fish:
  • Mimicking Natural Habitats:
Many fish species naturally live in environments with decaying plant matter, so adding botanicals to an aquarium can reduce stress and encourage more natural behaviour's, including breeding.

  • Tannin Release:
As botanicals decompose, they release tannins into the water, which can darken the water and lower pH levels. This can be beneficial for fish that prefer softer, acidic water.

  • Food Source:
Botanicals can serve as a food source for some fish and invertebrates, such as plecos and shrimp. As they break down, they develop a layer of biofilm that can be a valuable food source.

  • Hiding and Spawning Sites:
Botanicals can provide hiding spots for shy fish and some species may even use them for spawning, like some catfish.

  • Improved Aesthetics:
Botanicals can enhance the natural look of an aquarium and make it more aesthetically pleasing.
